Woodside Bed & Breakfast
Set within the Wairarapa landscape, Woodside Bed & Breakfast is positioned to capture uninterrupted views of the Tararua Ranges. Long and low, the home is anchored to the land - its form deliberately restrained, allowing the surrounding landscape to take precedence.

The plan is organised into two distinct wings, connected by a central indoor–outdoor courtyard. This arrangement creates a clear balance between living and business. One wing is dedicated to short-stay accommodation, with three guest rooms, each complete with its own bathroom and kitchenette. The opposing wing contains the home’s private bedrooms, offering separation and retreat from guests.
Between these two wings, shared living spaces form the heart of the home. Kitchen, dining and living areas open directly to the courtyard and pool, creating a natural point of connection while maintaining a clear threshold between public and private zones. The result is a home that functions seamlessly for both everyday living and hosting.
Internally, the material palette brings warmth and depth. Timber is used extensively throughout the joinery, grounding the spaces and adding a sense of craftsmanship and continuity. This is reinforced by a strong, consistent ceiling language - panelled timber ceilings run throughout both interior and exterior spaces, drawing the eye through the home and extending the architecture outward into the covered outdoor areas.
A bold but considered use of colour adds character without overwhelming the architecture. Feature surfaces and finishes introduce contrast and richness, balanced by the natural tones of timber and the softer, neutral base palette.
Large-format windows and full-height sliding doors open the home to its surroundings, maximising light and establishing constant visual connection to the landscape. These openings allow spaces to expand and contract with the seasons, supporting a true indoor–outdoor way of living. More intimate moments are equally considered, such as the built-in window seat off the bedroom - framing views while providing a quiet place to pause.
The covered outdoor room - defined by vertical timber battens - acts as a threshold between inside and out, reinforcing the connection between the two wings while providing shelter and usability year-round.
Woodside Bed & Breakfast is a composed response to modern rural living - where architecture supports both lifestyle and livelihood, balancing openness with privacy through a clear, purposeful plan and a warm, highly resolved interior.
