Set within the industrial precinct of Masterton, Strength Nation was envisioned as a purpose-built training facility - not a retrofit, but a building designed from the ground up to support performance. For Holmes Architecture, this was an opportunity to take a blank industrial site and shape a high-spec environment that reflects strength, discipline and identity at every scale.

Architecture in an Industrial Context
The form is direct and unapologetic. Clad in black vertical steel, the building sits confidently within its industrial surroundings while clearly distinguishing itself through proportion, detailing and brand integration. Oversized glazing activates the street edge, offering transparency into the training environment and creating a strong visual connection between inside and out.
The structure utilises large-span Timberspan portal frames, allowing for expansive, uninterrupted internal volumes. This clear-span approach was fundamental to the brief - delivering flexibility, adaptability and the ability to future-proof the space as training needs evolve.
By night, illuminated signage reinforces the brand presence, transforming the façade into a bold, graphic statement within the precinct.
Interior Planning and Experience
Internally, the spatial planning prioritises clarity and flow. A generous weights zone anchors the main floor, supported by a dedicated class space and a separate sauna area - integrating recovery and wellbeing into the overall training experience.
The architectural language remains consistent throughout: polished concrete floors, exposed structure and a restrained, dark material palette that aligns with the Strength Nation brand. Feature geometric lighting introduces rhythm overhead, contrasting against the black ceiling plane and adding a sense of energy and movement to the space.
The reception area provides a refined point of arrival, balancing robustness with detail through custom joinery and carefully considered finishes.
The result is a cohesive, purpose-built facility that embodies its brand while responding confidently to its industrial setting - a space designed to perform, endure and evolve.
